86 GMC Astro Van electronics failure – help please?
Ok so I was driving to a get together on the weekend and was charging my cell phone from the liter with just a DC/AC converter and the standard charger. This has worked fine in every other car I’ve owned since cell phones came out. Doing it on this van though caused the radio display and clock to die, interior lamps switch on the dash doesn’t work, and the interior lamps with switches on the roof don’t work either. The speakers are getting power when you turn on the radio but you only hear static. My ipod -> cassette adapter still works and plays music.
I checked the two fuses that might be related – radio and interior lights. Both were good. The Haynes manual never does much on the little electrical components and wasn’t much help. I’m thinking it could be a ground issue but I don’t want to tear the console apart just to have a look when I don’t quite know what I’m looking for. Suggestions?

Electrical problems in cars and trucks must be solved best by Auto Electrical repair shops. They are different from regular mechanics and they both think differently. The best and most economical are small shops 1 or 2 electrical mechanics mostly found in the yellow pages. Good Luck BS
